The short answer is yes, coffee counts, and you do not owe your body a glass of water for every cup. The long answer is a good story about how a handful of early experiments became something everybody knows and almost nobody checked.
How this calculator works
Every drink starts by contributing its full volume toward your fluid intake, because that is what the evidence supports. When thirteen common drinks were ranked by how much fluid people actually retained four hours later, coffee, tea, cola, and sparkling water were statistically indistinguishable from plain water. Only milk and oral rehydration solution beat it, on account of their sodium and nutrients.
A diuretic offset is subtracted only above a threshold, and only meaningfully for people who rarely drink caffeine. Tolerance to the diuretic effect develops within days, which is why habitual drinkers show no measurable loss at all. If you drink coffee daily and stay near the usual intakes, the calculator subtracts nothing, and it says so.
The caffeine total is tracked separately against the 400 mg a day that European and US authorities use as the adult reference point. That is a caffeine question rather than a hydration one: fluid from a fifth coffee still counts, even when the caffeine is more than you wanted.
Caffeine content varies widely between brews, beans, and brands, so the milligram figures are typical values rather than measurements of your cup. Estimates for healthy adults, not medical advice.
Where the myth came from
The belief that coffee dehydrates traces back to early experiments that gave caffeine to people who had gone without it for days or weeks. Under those conditions caffeine does increase urine output. The finding was real; the generalization to everyday coffee drinking was not.
Two things were missed. The first is tolerance: regular drinkers stop showing the effect within a few days, and most people who ask this question drink coffee every day. The second is arithmetic. A mug of coffee delivers about 240 mL of water, and even where a mild diuretic effect appears it accounts for a small fraction of that volume. The drink puts in far more than the caffeine takes out.
When Birmingham researchers tested it directly, giving habitual drinkers four mugs of coffee a day and comparing against the same volume of water, every hydration marker they measured came out the same. Total body water, urine output, blood and urine concentration: no difference.

Only the last row loses anything to a diuretic offset, and it takes six coffees in someone unused to caffeine to get there. Every other day counts in full.

The question worth asking instead
If coffee is not costing you fluid, the caffeine is still doing something: it has a half-life of around five hours in most adults, which means an afternoon cup is still half present at bedtime. That is the real cost of a late coffee, and it has nothing to do with hydration.

Frequently asked questions
Does coffee count as water intake?
Yes. Coffee is mostly water and the body keeps that water. When researchers ranked thirteen drinks by how much fluid people actually retained, coffee and tea scored the same as plain water. Health authorities including the US Institute of Medicine count caffeinated drinks toward daily fluid intake, so your morning coffee goes on the tally like anything else.
Does coffee dehydrate you?
Not at normal intakes. The idea comes from old studies that gave large caffeine doses to people who had abstained for days beforehand. When habitual coffee drinkers were given four mugs a day and compared against the same volume of water, no measure of hydration differed between the two. A mild diuretic effect can appear at high single doses in people unused to caffeine, and it is small next to the volume of the drink itself.
How much caffeine is too much?
European and US food safety authorities both treat 400 mg a day as the reference point for healthy adults, roughly four mugs of filter coffee, with 200 mg as a sensible ceiling for a single dose. Pregnancy guidance is lower, around 200 mg a day. Those limits are about caffeine itself, not hydration; the fluid still counts even when the caffeine is more than you want.
Does tea hydrate you as well as water?
Essentially yes, and tea carries less caffeine per cup than coffee, so the question barely arises. Both hot and iced tea scored alongside water in beverage hydration testing. Herbal infusions have no caffeine at all and are plain water with flavour as far as fluid balance is concerned.
What about energy drinks and cola?
They count as fluid too, and cola tested no differently from water. The reasons to moderate them are sugar and caffeine dose rather than hydration: a single large energy drink can carry as much caffeine as two coffees, which matters more for sleep and heart rate than for your fluid tally.
Does decaf count?
Fully, and without the caffeine question attached. Decaffeinated coffee retains only a small fraction of the caffeine, so it behaves like water with flavour. It is a useful way to keep a coffee habit going later in the day without pushing the caffeine total up.
Should I drink extra water to make up for coffee?
No. Adding a glass of water per coffee to compensate for a loss that does not happen at normal intakes just means drinking more than you need. Use your usual fluid target, count the coffee toward it, and let thirst and urine colour do the fine tuning.
Why does coffee make me need the toilet then?
Volume, mostly. A large mug is a substantial amount of liquid arriving at once, and the bladder responds to that regardless of caffeine. Caffeine does have a mild effect on urine production, but drinking the same volume of water produces a similar trip. Feeling it soon after does not mean you finished the day down on fluid.
